“Un juglar por la villa y corte” is a work that unites the narrative lyricism of the symphonic poem with the expressive force of a guitar concerto. Across its four movements, the piece tells the story of a young minstrel who, in Madrid in the year 1616, becomes embroiled in a journey that blends wonder, love, danger, and flight.

The solo guitar is not only the musical protagonist but the very symbol of the minstrel. Its strings translate his emotions, steps, choices, and passions: from his erratic wandering through the streets to the intimacy of falling in love or the tension of pursuit. The orchestra, meanwhile, is the city that surrounds him: alive, unpredictable, sometimes accomplice, sometimes threat.

  • I. Bigardeo — Allegretto errante: A minstrel arrives in Madrid. The guitar advances like him: curious, fragmented, full of startles. In his wandering he reaches Calle Tudescos, where a warm, bustling tavern halts his steps and marks the beginning of his destiny.

  • II. Jácara tabernera — Vivo y danzante: Inside the tavern the jácara erupts: a popular, unrestrained, celebratory rhythm. The guitar becomes extroverted, complicit in the dance and the courtship between the minstrel and the young tavern keeper. Passion awakens desire, but also jealousy and rivalries.

  • III. Al Rocío del Alba — Andante esfumato: At dawn, the lovers walk through a sleeping city. The guitar whispers a nascent love, until a funeral procession breaks in with gravity. The tavern keeper fears that her former suitor is behind that shadow that threatens her lover’s future.

  • IV. Caprichosos Cielos — Presto fantástico: The pursuit erupts across the rooftops of Habsburg Madrid. The guitar runs, leaps, trembles; the orchestra drives and stalks. It is a struggle for life, for love, for freedom. The ending remains open, suspended like a leaf torn from the wind.

“Un juglar por la villa y corte” is, ultimately, a musical voyage that turns the guitar into the voice, body, and soul of a young dreamer. Through it, we are invited to traverse a baroque, living Madrid, where every corner hides a story and every note contains an emotion.

The third movement of this concerto for guitar and orchestra is a deeply expressive Adagio, conceived as a space for breathing and emotional depth. Its writing is rooted in cante jondo, evoking that mode of singing that springs from the most intimate place, where each note seems to emerge from an ancient, shared memory. We hope this movement proves as moving as it is expressive.

Soon we will share more excerpts from the concerto so you can continue discovering its complete architecture and expressive journey.
