Melissian Variations is one of the most intimate and heartfelt works composed by Álvaro Alvarado. Written to celebrate the birth of Melissa, daughter of pianist José Francisco Martínez de Andrés, the piece unfolds through a refined cycle of theme and variations, creating a musical universe in which each movement reflects an artistic discourse of remarkable expressive richness.

The work is structured in six movements that traverse a broad spectrum of contrasts and emotions. The Prelude: Allegro con fuoco bursts forth with radiant energy and vitality, embodying the joyous celebration of the event that inspired the composition. It is followed by the Theme: Andante, which presents the essential melodic material with tender sincerity. The subsequent variations explore new perspectives on this musical idea: from the playful and carefree character of Variation I: Allegretto giocoso, to the rhythmic drive and elegance of Variation II: Allegro moderato; from the introspective and contemplative atmosphere of Variation III: Lento, to the lightness and culminating brilliance of Variation IV: Allegretto, which brings the cycle to a close with a sense of fulfillment and grandeur.

The result is a score of remarkable narrative subtlety, in which the balance between virtuosity, lyricism, and musical architecture allows the music to unfold with natural ease, transforming the listening experience into a deeply human and moving journey.

The performance of Melissian Variations brings together four musicians of exceptional artistic sensitivity: pianists Fan Mo and Midori Eto, saxophonist Damián Casado, and trumpeter Marcos Quesada. Together, they breathe life into a work whose emotional depth demands a profound capacity for dialogue, attentive listening, and collective musical expression.

AThrough the artistic rapport shared by these four performers, every facet of this deeply personal score is revealed: its overflowing energy, the tenderness of its most intimate moments, its spirit of playfulness, contemplation, and hope. Thanks to their interpretation, Melissian Variations transcends the private tribute that inspired its creation and becomes a musical experience capable of resonating with the emotional memory and sensitivity of every listener.
